Bottle (1/2)

MFA thesis project cateloguing the history of two totemic objects across centuries of still life.

According to Baudelaire, objects fall into two categories: eternal (organic) and transitory (contextual). Transitory objects are man-made and symbolic of an era; they orient the viewer and provide a sense of time and place. The bottle is a prime example of a transitory object dominant throughout art history in still life.
